Who We Are
Founded by Rebecca Adamson in 1997, First Peoples Worldwide is dedicated to strengthening Indigenous communities through the restoration of their authority and control over their assets.
The programs of First Peoples Worldwide are grounded in the belief that assets are the building blocks of sustainable prosperity. Indigenous Peoples own substantial assets, but frequently lack the authority and control to benefit from them. First Peoples Worldwide partners with Indigenous Peoples to help them establish their assets, advance their decisions about them, and develop the capacities to carry out these decisions.
From the progress and interplay of Indigenous assets, decisions, and capacities in the local sustainable development process, Indigenous Peoples demonstrate a voice, a presence, and practices that have begun to pervade the world stage of dominant institutional systems, in part through FPW advocacy. First Peoples Worldwide advocates extensively with policy councils, governments, funders, and economic development institutions on behalf of Indigenous Peoples. First Peoples Worldwide engages with multinational corporations and extractive industries, encouraging them to work directly with Indigenous Peoples to establish mutually beneficial agreements. FPW established the Keepers of the Earth Program and Fund to build the capacities of Indigenous Peoples for managing protected areas on their own homelands. FPW promotes socially responsible investing through Corporate Engagement, advocates for policy changes within U.S. and foreign governments and global agencies, and maintains a research distribution program on Indigenous Peoples and their issues.
As First Peoples Worldwide bridges Indigenous Peoples into broader partnerships, as they reach out to network and share common experiences and best practices, as they learn from others who have crossed the same bridges going the other way – into their communities – Indigenous Peoples will secure their future. In the process, they will help to secure humankind's.
