Awa Defense of Homelands 2007 Campaign
As part of our Corporate Engagement program, First Peoples’ is assisting the Awa in defending their homelands against government-backed multinational corporations.
For over twenty years the Federation of Awa Centers have been responsible stewards of their territory. They have engaged sustainable resource extraction to provide for their needs, productive partnerships with NGOs, education programs for their people, and respectful research methods. They have become a role model throughout the world of indigenous stewardship.
Yet the Awa reserve is threatened by legislative changes that facilitate the encroachment of African Palm plantations and illegal logging interests into the Awa territory.
The Awa Federation protects one of the most important environmental treasures of Ecuador – the Choco Forest. Please support the Awa in their efforts to continue their excellent stewardship.
In support of the Awa of Ecuador, we have recently solicited the help of our friends from the Socially Responsible Investment Indigenous Peoples’ Task Force to join our campaign.
