Grantee Stories
In 2008, First Peoples Worldwide continued with a successful second year of our Keepers of the Earth Fund (KOE) grantmaking program and welcomed development and change within the program. As KOE grows, we receive an extensive number of applications from countries around the globe. The nature of each application is different and First Peoples’ staff takes each into account individually, responding to each applicant. During 2008, we further revised and refined our initial grant application in order to receive the best information necessary to make decisions regarding potential grantee projects. This eliminates the amount of time spent between the receiving initial application and approving or denying the grant. We have entered our second year with a more refined grantmaking process. Our first year taught us a lot about working with our communities and how best to support them and execute a process they can easily maneuver when requesting funds. In 2008, we also began receiving our first grant reports from 2007 grantees.
First Peoples believes that successful economic development is a holistic approach that takes into account political, social, and cultural variables of a community. With these beliefs, First Peoples’ KOE grant activities focus heavily on cultural and educational exchanges, land and asset mapping, and data collection. KOE funding empowers Indigenous communities to execute projects to achieve community goals, enhance community development, protect land rights, and speak out about conservation and climate change, two issues where Indigenous communities are especially impacted and hold a wealth of untapped knowledge.
