Grantee Stories

First Peoples is proud of the grants we made in 2009 and the unprecedented support we have been able to provide for Indigenous communities and organizations to design and implement their own development projects according to the specific goals and requirements of each individual community and peoples. As we move forward with the Keepers of the Earth Fund, we will continue to support these projects where Indigenous communities are able to develop and act at the direction of the community in a way they feel is most appropriate. Every year, the number of grant requests we receive far exceeds our Fund’s capacity, so as we look to the future, we hope to leverage additional funds so we can meet more requests with a positive response. We have been limited in the past by having the application available only in English and recently have translated our application and reporting materials into Spanish and French to open up our application to more communities. Although those are colonial languages, it is a step in the right direction as Spanish or French may be one language removed from the Indigenous language rather than two, as English may be. Our hope is for the Keepers of the Earth Fund to grow and continue having a positive impact in Indigenous communities, and based on the successes of the previous three years, we feel confident that we will be able to achieve this aim.
